Study for us.

William Cheah

I used to teach an English Foundation class for a local private
college some years back. The class consisted of a mixture of locals
and foreign students, of which the majority of the foreign students
were from China and Indonesia. They would make up about half the
class, with the remainder from Malaysia.

Entry to this class was based on whether the students passed their
language proficiency test. If they failed they had to take this class.
I found it strange that such a large number of Malaysians had to take
this class, with English being our second official language. But
that's not the story this time around.

I tried to make the class something different. Instead of being
totally based on exams, I structured the marking scheme on 60%
assignment, 20% exam and 20% presentation. On the first day of class,
I would explain this to the students. The assignment was always the
same. I wanted them to do something, anything, based on the
Environment, and present a report with photos, etc etc and to be
completed with a written essay of not less than 1500 words. The choice
of topic was theirs although we would have different topics on
environment for discussion during every class. They had until the
final 2 weeks before the end of the semester to hand it up. And of
course they could consult me at anytime.

The interesting thing is this. Out of nearly 500 students who went
through this course, only 1 Malaysian student ever consulted me. The
rest were foreign students.

So comes the day to hand in the assignments. They would pile their
reports on my desk. I would take a look and tell them this. "There is
something you have to know. When I go through your assignment, and I
feel that you have copied and pasted the report, I will choose 5
sentences from the report and ask you to explain the meaning to me. It
can also be the meaning of a word. If you can't I will fail your
assignment."

Silence in the class.....chirp chirp chirp....

"Now I will go for a 5 minute toilet break. If you feel you need to
redo your report, please feel free to take your report back and slide
it under my door before the end of next week."

In close to 3 years I taught this class, by the time I came back after
5 minutes, the pile on the table will be down by half...always.

And those who took back were nearly always the Malaysian students.

You see, our students were very smart. They felt they did not need to
learn and put in the effort. They felt that by copying something from
the Internet, they would pass the class easily. By the way, this is
called plagiarism.

My question today is, is it the fault of the education system? Is it
an attitude problem? Or is it both?

Are we now reaping the fruits of what we have sown over the years. To
achieve results without the need to analyse, understand and put in the
effort? Building a society where the effort of thinking is secondary
as long as the results favour us? To accept blindly what is in front
of us because the alternative of discovering more takes too much
effort.

A friend of mine used to say, if we are too lazy to look left and
right before we cross the road, we are bound to be hit by by a car
sooner or later.

When your heart takes over your body.

*follow @fact on twitter for some awesome facts*

The human heart, biologically speaking, it's nothing other than a group of cardiac  muscle cells goupped into tissue and form one of the most important I ngan in our body. It's nothing other than a machine that helps to pump oxyhaemoglobin, carbominoglobin,    deoxyhaemoglobin and etc.

But based on the psychologist, the heart has a mind of its own and always tries to fight control of the body with the brain. But unevidently the heart won majoritily of the time. Each and every step we take mostly we think first, make the brain conclude into a few choices the we let the heart lead. That's is a fact.

Here I want to talk about one of my friend, he is madly in loved (I think, due to his behaviour of asking all the series of questions, that caused me to be constantly annoyed by him.) with one of my lecture mate.

Unfortunately, she DOSEN'T feel the same way as he does so I kind of pity him an I don't want to say anything to him for now and he might get a mental breakdown as it is closer to our final exam. So I think for now I'm just going to just sit back, relax and watch the show as it entertains me.

I'm sad and somewhat amused that he constantly fell in to the friend zone. And he don't realize that.

(Damn. I'm a devious person.)
That's all from me. Good day folks.

Chemistry "aim for excellence 2"

Huuuh!!!!!!
I'm feeling tired out. I can feel the blood taken in by my brain. ( well actually it's the process of gaseous exchange). But still after taking the test I'm pumped out.

On Wednesday morning, talk about at 8.00 in the morning a, my class(1M3S05) had to seat for the MCQ chemistry test, eventhough it's mostly consists of organic chemistry, it's a damn brain acher.
Then last night, to be exact at 8pm( eight again, I think the matric lecturer have something with the number eight... Hurmm.) anyway it was until 10pm I got out of the lecture hall( yeah I had my exam in the lecture hall but it's ok since it was air conned) and I felt drained. The question was killer. Well, to be fair, the question is simple but I don't have time to process to answer. So I just like at the structure they are expecting to come out for our batch.

So I don't really care about the pre pspm test.. For me it's just an exercise for my brain. (Well duh)

Anyhow.... For those that have te same brain wave as me, you can use my method or your own.. Coz I may sue you.
That's all from me..
Got to go study. ( code word for= time to slack off.)

Pro procrastination.

Anybody who is a student will procrastinate. Like me.

Sorry not so sorry

"Assalualaikum,Hello, Olla, moshi moshi!"

I'm currently in matriculation program, well actually I'm about to finish this program this coming 28th April and I'm currently having my trials this two weeks.

Well both the whole week. Te papers are depending on the days the lecturers' preference for the students avaibility.

Oh yeah forgot to tell you the main reason for this post. It's to tell you that I'm a bit sorry that I didn't post anything about my matriculation life. So when I finish I'll tell you in a few parts an maybe some of the posts are going to be just pics.

Anyway that's from me... Need to go and revive chemistry chap 1-12. Tomorrow I have MCQ test. Wish me luck.
